TORONTO, Jan. 18, 2001 (PRNewswire) -- Mississauga-based Hatch Mott MacDonald, the infrastructure and transportation engineering and construction management company, has acquired the eastern-U.S.-based Killam Group Inc.

Killam is a leading infrastructure and consulting engineering firm with 450 staff specializing in water and wastewater, transportation and environmental management. The company will continue to operate as Killam.

Part of Killam Group's transportation business was acquired by Hatch Mott MacDonald in April last year. This latest acquisition reinforces Hatch Mott MacDonald's transportation strengths and gives it a significant base for expansion in the water and environmental sectors in Florida, New Jersey and other eastern states where Killam enjoys an outstanding reputation with both government and private organizations.

The purchase provides a substantial presence for Hatch Mott MacDonald in the U.S. and Canada. Including the Killam offices in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Florida, Alabama and New Jersey, Hatch Mott MacDonald now has more than 700 employees and 30 offices across North America.

Killam specializes in water resources planning and wastewater management, and ancillary services including planning, design, hydraulic analysis, water treatment, construction supervision and operation and maintenance.

Recent projects include a $50-million (U.S.) wastewater treatment and incinerator expansion project; an $80-million advanced water treatment facility; combined sewer overflow projects serving a population of 2 million people; and an innovative quality assurance and control program of concrete placement for New York City's $4 billion a year environmental facilities construction program.

Killam's transportation business - focused primarily in the southeast U.S. - provides services for the construction and rehabilitation of bridges, highways and local roads. Notable projects include: design of 40 miles of four- lane divided highway, construction cost $42 million; design of site infrastructure related to a $1-billion resort project in western Florida; construction inspection for the Escambia River Bridge reconstruction with a construction cost of $25 million.
