CHICAGO, IL, Oct. 11, 2007 -- Optimatics has received approval from the California Water Service Company (Cal Water) to undertake an Optimization Study in support of the development of a Water Supply and Facilities Master Plan for its Bakerfields District, which Cal Water describes as one of the utility's most complex water distribution systems.

Cal Water's Bakersfield District supplies approximately half of the City of Bakersfield, and the areas of Olcese and North Garden. The District is located approximately 110 miles north of Los Angeles and serves 247,000 people with approximately 70 million gallons of water per day (MGD).

Currently, Cal Water's Bakersfield District is supplied primarily from an underground aquifer. The aquifer has been stabilized through recharge programs and development of alternative sources of surface supply. In June 2003, Cal Water added a 20 MGD plant to treat water from the local Kern River. Cal Water is actively pursuing options to treat additional surface water for delivery to the Bakersfield District. Additional treatment plants are in detailed design phase.

Consultants, Kennedy-Jenks and West-Yost Associates are engaged to undertake the master plan study. Optimatics has been brought in to optimize the infrastructure options for the future system and determine how operations can be modified to incorporate new surface water sources in the most efficient manner.

The optimization aims to achieve significant project life-cycle cost saving and improved system performance.

Cal Water is the largest investor-owned American water utility west of the Mississippi River and the second largest in the US. Formed in 1926, the San Jose-based company serves nearly 2 million people through 24 regulated districts throughout California.

Optimatics is a leader in optimization solutions for the water industry.
