HOUSTON, TX, Nov. 4, 2010 - Headworks Bio is pleased to announce that their CleanSea Shipboard Wastewater Treatment System onboard Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas and the soon to ship out, Allure of the Seas, has received certification from Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
This certification follows successful testing of the CleanSea system to verify that the effluent produced by the system meets MEPC 159(55) regulations. These regulations stipulate that the effluent has met or exceeded certain characteristics, verified over a 10 day period. The Headworks Bio CleanSea system produces excellent quality effluent with all parameters under the maximums by 30-90%.
Both systems onboard the commercial cruise ships process all black water, hotel grey water, laundry grey water, galley grey water, and decanted bioresidue wastewater produced during operation. The system, which is 100% redundant, is rated to handle 3,000 m³/day (790,000 GPD).
"The DNV certification strengthens Headworks Bio's position as a leader in the shipboard wastewater treatment market," said Michele LaNoue, President and CEO of Headworks Bio. "This is a rigorous third-party verification that our systems meet and exceed international standards."
At the core of the CleanSea system, is a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor ("MBBR") treatment process. MBBR technology employs thousands of virgin polyethylene biofilm carriers operating in mixed motion within an aerated wastewater treatment process. Every biofilm carrier dramatically increases productivity by expanding the surface area needed to sustain heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria. It is this high-density population of bacteria that achieves high-rate biodegradation within the system, while also offering process reliability out at sea and ease of operation.
