DC Water to house world's largest deammonification system for advanced nitrogen removal

Nov. 19, 2014
DC Water has selected the biological DEMON technology from World Water Works to remove high amounts of nitrogen from its water, among other purposes. Once installed, it will represent the largest operating anammox-based treatment system in the world.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, Nov. 19, 2014 -- The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority - Blue Plains (DC Water) has officially selected the biological DEMON® technology from World Water Works Inc. (WWW), a designer and manufacturer of wastewater treatment solutions, to remove high amounts of nitrogen from its water, among other purposes. Once installed, it will represent the largest operating anammox-based treatment system in the world.

The new DEMON treatment system, a deammonification process, removes nitrogen from water at a substantially lower consumption of energy and chemicals compared to traditional nitrogen removal processes. This application of WWW's DEMON technology, part of a new solids processing facility at DC Water's Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant, provides a rapid return on investment (ROI) and aids in the ability for DC Water to implement other innovative processes, such as CAMBI.

The DEMON technology uses 60-percent less energy and produces 90-percent less sludge than traditional nitrogen removal processes and does not require the use of methanol, leading to additional reduced costs. Coupling these sustainable features with the technology's small carbon footprint, which sequesters carbon dioxide, the DEMON system is very environmentally friendly.

A unique biomass separation device maintains appropriate levels of both ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria, both of which are key to the low-energy, no-chemical deammonification process. This leads to greater system reliability and reduced maintenance. The process utilized by DEMON technology was nominated for the UN's Most Energy Efficient Project Award and recently won the AAEES Sustainability award for a project at Hampton Roads Sewage District (HRSD) (see "WWW receives AAEES Honor Award for Environmental Sustainability").
