PHILIPSBURG, PA, Dec. 1, 2014 -- American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, recently announced that Pennsylvania American Water's (PAW) Philipsburg Water Treatment Plant has earned the elite Phase IV "Presidents Award" from the Partnership for Safe Water.
The Partnership program is a volunteer initiative developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), American Water Works Association (AWWA) and other organizations representing water suppliers striving to provide water quality that surpasses regulatory standards.
PAW's facility serves approximately 7,700 customers in Clearfield and Centre counties and has been participating in the Partnership program since 1996. It is only the fourth treatment plant in Pennsylvania to receive the Presidents Award, with only 12 treatment facilities in the U.S. that have achieved it.
PAW recently hosted a recognition ceremony for plant personnel to receive the award. Participating from the Philipsburg plant were Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Regional Director Marcus Kohl and AWWA - Pennsylvania Section representative Randy Straub.
Phase IV goals are the highest possible level of performance that can be achieved in the four-phase program. The Presidents Award recognizes achieving Phase IV's very stringent individual filter performance goals for turbidity (cloudiness).
The Partnership for Safe Water is a voluntary self-assessment and optimization program for water treatment plant and distribution system operation. Partnership members participate in a rigorous four-phase self-assessment and peer review process, developed by industry experts and are recognized for their commitment to delivering safe water to their communities.
