Feb. 13, 2015 -- Fibrelite, a manufacturer of GRP/FRP composite manhole covers and underground containment systems, has supplied trench covers for an engineering team constructing a specialist wastewater treatment system in Antarctica.
The treatment system, designed for treating black and grey wastewater before discharging it into the sea, had been manufactured for use in the Antarctic region and required lightweight covers for easy access. As such, Fibrelite's range of standard trench covers was identified as the solution and became an integral part of the design.
Working with the lead designer from the start, Fibrelite was able to manufacture the covers to fit the specific sizes required. In harsh conditions in the Antarctic, ease of access was critical, and a major benefit to the installation was that the covers were lightweight. With such extreme temperatures, the other benefit of GRP properties being non-corrosive and not affected by temperature variations was also critical.
For operators working within the facility, safety is also critical. As such, the covers are lifted regularly to ensure that the system is working efficiently. Durable and strong, every cover is manufactured using high technology resin transfer moulding production methods to create a highly engineered, monolithic composite product.
Fibrelite's range of standard and bespoke trench covers are available in a variety of load ratings and a wide selection of sizes to replace traditional cast iron or concrete versions. Designed as a 'fit-and-forget' product, the maintenance-free covers provide easy and safe access to the essential equipment.
