WASHINGTON, DC, Feb. 2, 2015 -- The U.S. Water Alliance recently announced that it has appointed G. Tracy Mehan, III, as interim president of the organization. Mehan replaces Ben Grumbles, who served as the Alliance president from 2010 until 2015, when he accepted Maryland Governor Larry Hogan's designation as Secretary of the Environment.
Mehan was recruited by the U.S. Water Alliance Board of Directors, where he served since the start of the organization. Prior to accepting the interim presidency, he has crafted a long and accomplished career working in various roles to promote and enforce environmental sustainability and watershed protection and conservation.
"I am excited and grateful that Tracy Mehan has accepted the position of 'interim president' for the U. S. Water Alliance," said Dick Champion, Alliance board chairman. "Tracy's appointment will position the Alliance to continue to flow forward in uniting people and policies for One Water Sustainability. He brings to the Alliance extraordinary knowledge, passion and systems thinking."
Mehan acted as principal with the Cadmus Group, Inc., an environmental consulting firm, from 2004 to 2014. Earlier (2001-2003), he served as assistant administrator for Water at the Environmental Protection Agency, where he directed both the Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water Acts programs including permitting, infrastructure finance, wetlands regulation, standards, and watershed management. Further, he developed new policies and guidance on watershed-based permitting and water quality trading.
During his career, Mehan has also served as director of the Michigan Officer of the Great Lakes and a member of Governor John Engler's Cabinet (1993-2001), as well as director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and member of the Cabinet of Governor John Ashcroft (1989-1992). He is a graduate of Saint Louis University and its School of Law. He is a member of the Missouri Bar.
