BOSTON, MA, May 4, 2015 -- The American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES), a nonprofit organization promoting excellence in environmental engineering and science, announced that it has awarded CDM Smith, a full-service engineering and construction firm, with a Grand Prize in the Design category.
AAEES recognized CDM Smith for its design efforts involved with a digester improvement project for the Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority (WRA) in Des Moines, Iowa. CDM Smith partnered with WRA on a bioenergy plan and digester improvements that will increase capacity and alternative energy production at WRA’s existing wastewater treatment facility.
The utility operates a 97-million gallon-per-day facility that produces high-quality treated wastewater discharged into the Des Moines River, biosolids used for agricultural fertilizer and biogas used for electricity and heat. The awards were presented at the AAEES awards luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, April 23.
