Aug. 14, 2015 -- The American Water Works Association (AWWA) and Environmental Engineering & Technology (EE&T) have partnered to announce that they are looking for water utilities to participate in an important study on disinfectant residuals during the months of August and September.

Specifically, the study is seeking systems that use free chlorine -- either pre-or post-filter (not raw water) -- year-round for secondary disinfection in their distribution systems and have disinfection byproduct levels near the 64/48 TTHM/HAA5 (80 percent of the Maximum Contaminant Levels).

Participation in this study would involve discussions with EE&T staff to better understand each system and chlorination feed points. It would also require collecting and returning -- via pre-paid shipping -- five 1-L samples of settled or filtered un-chlorinated water. Samples would need to be taken in the next 30 to 60 days.

Utilities will not be identified in the results and/or the published paper, but each system will receive its own results. If your utility is willing to participate in this study, or if you have any questions, email AWWA Regulatory Affairs Manager Steve Via at [email protected], or call him at 202-326-6130.
