Netherlands goes Dutch with €20m investment in Mozambique water network

The Dutch Government is injecting a €20 million grant into the Greater Maputo Water Supply Expansion project to provide potable drinking water to 650,000 people in Mozambique capital city, Maputo,

The project will be developed by Mozambique water supply company FIPAG, international engineering and project management consultancy Royal HaskoningDHV and water utility partner Vitens Evides International (VEI).

The project is needed to cope with a growing population in the city and expansion in the north-western side, with currently no public water supply.

Part of the World Bank funded Corumana water supply system, the project will include three new drinking water distribution centres, mains pipework, primary and secondary distribution lines, as well as nearly 1,000 km of tertiary network and more than 120,000 new household connections.

The Dutch Government is funding the execution of this project through its Facility for Infrastructure Development (ORIO) in developing countries. It follows ORIO funding (€2.2 million) of the previous development phase that resulted in the approved project plan.

Detailed design and tender documents are being prepared by Royal HaskoningDHV and VEI. It’s anticipated that construction works will start at the end of 2016.

Reina Buijs, the Netherlands deputy director-general for international cooperation, and the minister of public works, housing and water resources of Mozambique, His Excellency Carlos Bonete Martinho, signed the grant arrangement at the Amsterdam International Water Week.

Pedro Paulino, CEO at FIPAG, said: “This project is a vital part of the Corumana system and will help to improve living conditions. It will also be future-proofed to accommodate growth in the urban population.”
