QUEENSLAND, Australia – Spanish engineering company Acciona Agua has boosted its project count in Australia to three after securing a AUS$74 million (US$56m) contract to upgrade a wastewater treatment plant.

Working with Australian engineering group, Monadelphous to upgrade utility Unitywater’s Kawana Sewage Treatment Plant on the Sunshine Coast, the project involves the introduction of a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) wastewater treatment process.

The upgrade, scheduled for completion in December 2018, will expand the plant capacity from 90,000 EP (equivalent population) to 200,000 EP.

MBBR is based on thousands of specially designed polyethylene biofilm carriers (media) being placed into a bioreactor, providing a large surface area for micro-organisms to grow on.

These carriers are kept in suspension in the bioreactor by either mixers or aeration, with bacteria from the wastewater attaching themselves to the suspended carriers.

In addition, technology will be used to enhance the production and utilization of methane-rich biogas, which will be used to generate electricity and offset the plant’s power requirements, reducing its operational carbon footprint.

The Kawana contract is the third contract won by ACCIONA Agua in Australia.

The company designed and built the Seawater Reverse Osmosis desalination (SWRO) plant of Adelaide in South Australia and the Mundaring WTP in Western Australia, both of which are currently operated in joint venture by ACCIONA.
