ATACAMA, Chile – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Spanish company Almar Water Solutions and Chilean firm TRENDS Industrial to develop a solar powered desalination project for the Atacama region in Chile.
Called ENAPAC, an abbreviation for the Spanish name Energías y Aguas del Pacífico, the US$500 million project will have a maximum capacity of 2.600 l/s and will be powered by 100MW of solar energy.
As part of the agreement, Almar has become an equity investor in the project, with the MoU specifying a further joint development agreement.
The ENAPAC project is part of the list managed by the Office of Management of Sustainable Projects of the Chilean government Ministry of Economy.
ENAPAC has been nominated for the Design and Sustainability award, the Design to Improve Life INDEX AWARD, also known as the “Nobel prize of Design”.
Almar Water Solutions’s parent company Abdul Latif Jameel Energy & Environmental Services has a presence in Chile through Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV). It was awarded a 540 GWh project in January, corresponding to 25 percent of the total electricity open to tender.
