ALMATY, July 18, 2002 - The OSCE Centre in Almaty, in close co-operation with the non-governmental organization, Water Resources and Environmental Protection in Kazakhstan, is organizing a two-day conference on the theme: Quality of drinking water as a guarantee of social and environmental security.
The conference, which will take place in the Alatau sanatorium in Almaty on 22 and 23 July, enjoys the financial support of the German Government.
The quality of drinking water and access to it are problems for almost all parts of Kazakhstan. This has a direct impact on social stability and environmental security. As its main goal the conference will try to find a common area in which the Government, local administrations, potential local and foreign investors, international organizations and the community could work together in order to improve water quality and its supply systems.
Water issues in Almaty and Taraz will be used as case studies. The OSCE has also invited an independent expert from abroad.
It is expected that conference participants will develop recommendations aiming at the provision of good quality drinking water to the population.
The working languages are Russian and English. Registration begins on the first day at 9:00 am.
