Medford Water Commission gets new ozone generation system for drinking water facility

The Medford Water Commission in Oregon has recently started up an ozone generation system for drinking water at the Robert A. Duff plant in Medford.

WEST CALDWELL, NEW JERSEY, July 16, 2002 - The Medford Water Commission, Medford, OR has recently started up an ozone generation system for treating drinking water at the Robert A. Duff Water Treatment Plant in Medford.

The ozone generation system was supplied by PCI-WEDECO Environmental Technologies (West Caldwell, New Jersey), North America's leading ozone system manufacturer.

The project included two PCI-WEDECO EFFIZON ozone generators each capable of producing 680 pounds per day of ozone. The entire ozone system will be able to produce up to 1,400 pounds per day at high concentrations reaching 10% -12% by weight, using oxygen as the feed gas to maximize plant performance. The ozone system is capable of treating up to 45 MGD of water at this facility.

The ozone system addition is part of a plant upgrade and is designed to treat outbreaks of taste and odor, specifically Gesomin, and provide primary disinfection of Cryptosporidium

As part of an integrated and complete ozone system, PCI-WEDECO was responsible for the design and supply of the liquid oxygen (LOX) system, ozone generators, side-stream ozone injection system and ozone destruct units. The complete system is controlled by a state-of-the-art microprocessor based Ozone System Control Panel (OSCP), which was designed, assembled, programmed and supplied by PCI-WEDECO.

Black & Veatch, Kansas City, MO and Portland, Oregon, designed the new ozone system as part of a plant upgrade. Black & Veatch is a leading consulting engineering firm designing advanced drinking water facilities throughout North America and the world.

PCI-WEDECO is currently producing an ozone generation system for the City of Dallas, Texas for its' Eastside Water Treatment Plant. Upon commissioning in 2003, it will become the worlds largest ozone treatment system for potable water, capable of purifying up to 450 million gallons per day.

Ozone is a powerful oxidant, capable of oxidizing naturally occurring constituents that can adversely affect water quality in the form of color, organics/inorganics, tastes and odor. Ozone is also an extremely effective disinfectant for controlling harmful bacteria, viruses and protozoa including Cryptosporidium and Giardia, to ensure safe drinking water for consumers.

More and more plants are upgrading to ozone treatment, an environmentally friendly alternative to chlorine. Using ozone significantly reduces the amount of chlorine required minimizing the potential for chlorinated by-product formation, while producing excellent tasting, microbiologically safe drinking water. Ozone is also a cost effective and reliable technology that is playing an increasing role in water treatment as municipalities continue to upgrade their systems to provide the highest water quality to their customers.
