April 27, 2001--Celebrating one of the world's most precious resources, New Jersey-American is planning activities for National Drinking Water Week, May 6-12, 2001.

Some of the activities scheduled include donating drinking water fountains, a day at the State House with other utilities for a Water Expo, and the dedication of a water source educational tool called the Enviroscape. All this is part of a National effort to raise public awareness of the importance of clean drinking water.

For more than 30 years, the American Water Works Association, the world's largest scientific and educational organization dedicated to drinking water quality and public drinking water supply, has celebrated Drinking Water Week with its members.

In 1988, AWWA brought the event to the attention of our government and formed a coalition along with the League of Women Voters, the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators, and the US Environmental Protection Agency. After a resolution was sponsored to name the first week of May as National Drinking Water Week, the week-long observance was declared in a joint congressional resolution and signed by President Ronald Reagan.
