Three deaths linked to outbreak in Saskatchewan

NORTH BATTLEFORD, SASKATCHEWAN, May 8, 2001 — Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert said Monday he would appoint a chief justice to investigate a recent Cryptosporidium outbreak that is believed to have claimed at least three lives.

Medical Health Officer Dr. Gerhard Benade has confirmed 44 cases of cryptosporidiosis. The pathogen is believed to have entered the area's water supply between March 21 and April 17.

The judge will be able to question provincial, city and other officials.

Town residents, under a boil-water order since April 27, are looking for cleaner water supplies.

The American Water Works Association has a white paper on the prevention of cryptosporidium outbreaks on the Internet at http://www.awwa.org/govtaff/whawapap.htm.

Trojan announced that it has offered assistance to officials in North Battleford and is providing technical advice.
