VOORHEES, NJ, Oct. 26, 2010 -- American Water Works Company Inc. (NYSE: AWK), the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility company, today announced William L. Komianos, senior director of Operational Risk Management, has been elected Chair of the Water Sector Coordinating Council (WSCC). Komianos has more than 30 years experience in environmental health & safety and security, and holds one of the two WSCC seats assigned to the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC).

In September 2004, pursuant to Homeland Security Presidential Directive 7, the WSCC was formed by eight of the preeminent water and wastewater organizations to serve as a policy, strategy and coordination mechanism and to recommend actions to reduce and eliminate significant homeland security vulnerabilities to the water sector through interactions with the federal government and other critical infrastructures.

Komianos most recently served as WSCC vice-chair and has served as co-chair of the Critical Infrastructure Partnership Advisory Council Metrics Workgroup and the Water Sector Strategic Planning Working Group. He also serves as the Chair of the NAWC Security and Safety Committee, and is a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers and the American Water Works Association.

In his role at American Water, Komianos directs the Operational Risk Management staff with responsibilities for operations security, health & safety, and event management across the company. Prior to joining American Water, he served as vice president of Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance for Hamon-Research Cottrell and Air and Water Technologies; director for Clayton Environmental Consultants northeast region; and manager of Health, Safety & Security for Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products.
