Three more Siemens Barrier UV Systems certified for use in US drinking water apps

Siemens Water Technologies has received DVGW certification for three more of its Barrier UV Systems: the M2600, the A45 and the A120 -- making them certified for use in U.S. drinking water applications. All three systems are DVGW certified to provide a minimum Reduction Equivalent Dose of 40mJ/cm2 and, as a result, will also receive a 3-log inactivation credit for Cryptosporidium and Giardia by the EPA's UV Disinfection Guidance Manual. TORONTO, ON, Canada, June 25, 2007 -- Siemens Water Technologies has received DVGW certification for three more of its Barrier UV Systems: the M2600, the A45 and the A120 -- making them certified for use in U.S. drinking water applications. All three systems are DVGW certified to provide a minimum Reduction Equivalent Dose of 40mJ/cm2 and, as a result, will also receive a 3-log inactivation credit for Cryptosporidium and Giardia by the EPA's UV Disinfection Guidance Manual.

Using medium-pressure lamp technology, the Barrier M2600 system can handle flowrates up to 6.1 mgd (4,227 gpm). With low-pressure amalgam lamps, Barrier A systems complete Siemens Water Technologies' offering for low flow applications with capacities of 75 gpm (0.11 mgd) and 242 gpm (0.34 mgd) for A45 and A120, respectively.

Barrier M and A UV systems provide a cost-effective, reliable and operator-friendly solution to small- and medium-sized community drinking water systems. Adding the Barrier UV system to other disinfection processes provides a multi-barrier approach, and ensures complete inactivation of all waterborne pathogens. These systems' compact reaction chamber enables easy, flexible installation, especially in retrofit situations where space is limited.

Six of the 17 Barrier M systems and two of the five Barrier A systems are now certified for use in U.S. drinking water applications. All 22 systems can be used for commercial (e.g., swimming pools) and industrial applications, and most can be used for municipal wastewater applications. Now available in North America, these non-drinking water systems debuted in Europe several years ago.

DVGW, the world's most recognized standard for validation of UV systems, certifies reactors for performance (i.e., dose delivery) and monitoring of UV reactors. The performance is determined by a series of bioassays using bacillus subtilis as a surrogate microorganism. Monitoring is carried out by UV irradiance sensors. Validation testing determines a set of operating conditions that can be monitored by a utility to ensure that the UV dose required for a given pathogen inactivation credit is delivered.

The Barrier UV Systems were shown at the AWWA's 2007 Annual Conference & Exposition (ACE07).

Siemens Water Technologies delivers cost-effective, reliable water and wastewater treatment systems and services to municipal, industrial, commercial and institutional customers worldwide. The division "Water Technologies" is part of Siemens' Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) which is a system and solution provider for industrial and infrastructure facilities and global service provider for the plant and projects business covering planning, installation, operation and the entire life cycle. In fiscal 2006 (to September 30), I&S employed a total of 36,200 people worldwide and achieved total sales of EUR 8.819 billion, according to U.S. GAAP.
