Pipe locators
A new addition to the 3M™ Dynatel™ Locators 2200M Series, the 2220M locator is designed to provide a simple and accurate solution to locate buried pipes, cables and Sondes in even the most challenging field conditions. The rugged, highly sensitive receiver uses two active trace frequencies and provides a bar graph, signal strength and direction indication to the pipe/cable. In addition, the receiver is designed to detect passive power and auxiliary frequencies that do not require the use of a transmitter.

Ground penetrating radar
Radiodetection has launched the RD1000™ ground penetrating radar (GPR) system for locating pipe and underground utilities. Using radar technology, the detector displays an image map of underground features, including non-conductive materials such as plastic pipes. The system’s Locate Mode provides an accurate snapshot of underground conditions and uses a cursor to indicate the depth and location of a buried utility. The system ships in a single container, weighs less than 50lbs and can be assembled on site in less than two minutes.

Expansion joints
The Force Balanced Flex-Tend® Flexible Expansion Joint, available from EBAA Iron, can accommodate pressure-induced thrust forces. It uses an additional water chamber piston that acts in the equal and opposite direction of the imparting thrust and neutralizes the thrust forces. This allows designers to use flexible expansion joints in applications where bulky, cumbersome thrust blocks or other force-restricting devices are not applicable.

Root control chemicals
The only negative impact that RootX® has is on pipeline roots, not on the treatment plant or the surrounding environment. Registered with the EPA for use in both sanitary and storm pipe (EPA Registration # 68464-1) the product is engineered to take the complexity out of chemical root control so that pipeline roots can be killed and pipe-flow capacity restored at minimal cost, training and environmental impact.

Leak detection
Pure Technologies has developed an innovative method of identifying leaks in large diameter water and wastewater pipelines. SmartBall is a miniature data acquisition system sealed in an aluminum alloy core, surrounded by a foam shell. It is released un-tethered into a pipeline and collects leak data while it traverses the pipe with the flow. Downstream, the ball is retrieved with a collapsible net and its data is reviewed to determine the presence and location of leaks in the pipeline.

Pipe flushing software
MWH Soft now offers InfoWater UDF, a comprehensive ArcGIS-centric pipe cleaning and maintenance software system for water distribution systems. The software lets users generate detailed reports of flushing sequences showing which hydrants and valves should be manipulated for optimal cleaning while avoiding excessive pressure drops (e.g., below 20 psi) and high velocities (e.g., above 8 ft/sec) in the system. It also computes minimum flushing time, total flushing volume and pipe length and available flow at the minimum residual pressure. A detailed field journal (flush book) provides field personnel with the information they need to implement the optimal flush sequences for maximum cleaning at maximum cost savings.
