EDMONTON, June 12, 2002 -- The Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission, in partnership with CU Water, announced recently the extension of a regional water system, expanding the current treated water supply service to include the communities of Holden, Bruce and Viking in Beaver County located in east-central Alberta.
Recent drought conditions in the area and the high cost of maintaining an independent water treatment facility are major issues for the communities in Beaver County. "The most effective solution in addressing these concerns with the future water supply in the area, is to expand the existing regional water system to the three new communities," says Brent Clark, Manager, CU Water. "This extended service will allow us to ensure a reliable supply of quality water for the residents within the region."
The Board Chair of the Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission explained that the expansion of the pipeline to include the communities in Beaver County makes good sense. "For the last 10 years, the existing pipeline, owned and operated by CU Water, has been serving the communities of Tofield and Ryley, providing a reliable and safe water supply," says Ross Good, Board Chair, Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission. "The expansion of the pipeline allows more communities to benefit and is a example of effective regional cooperation."
The project was made possible by a grant from Alberta Transportation, through the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership (AMWWP), which funded a majority of the project. CU Water, the owner and operator of the system funded the remainder of the project.
The project demonstrates the province's commitment to providing assistance to municipalities for clean, safe drinking water.
The water pipeline will run for about 50 km from Ryley to Bruce and then east to Viking. The total cost of the expansion is approximately $9M and is scheduled for completion by the end of October this year. As owners and operators of the current system, CU Water will oversee the design, construction and operation of the entire system.
