New Jersey American Water investing $1.6M in water service improvements

VOORHEES, NJ, DECEMBER 2, 2016 -- New Jersey American Water will be installing approximately $1.6 million of new water mains on Stuyvesant Avenue from Chestnut Street to Vauxhall Road in Union. The roughly 5,600 feet of new pipe replaces water main that was installed as far back as the 1920s. The aging water lines will be replaced with ductile iron pipes.

"This project is part of New Jersey American Water's multimillion dollar program to accelerate the renewal of water infrastructure that is reaching the end of its useful life,” stated Robert Schaefer, senior director of Operations, Central Region. “Once completed, this improvement project will enhance water service reliability and water flows for household consumption and fire protection.”

Work began this week and will continue Mondays through Fridays, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Weather permitting, the project will be completed by the end of February. Final paving and restoration will be completed in the spring of 2017.

Traffic control will be coordinated with the local police department. New Jersey American Water advises pedestrians and drivers to take caution in the vicinity of the work sites, obey traffic signs and follow any detour routes when driving in the area.

Customers may experience a temporary service interruption while New Jersey American Water interconnects the new main to the distribution system. If water service is interrupted, it will be for less than four hours and customers will be notified in advance so they can prepare. Customers may also experience a slight temporary discoloration of water. If this happens, customers are advised to let a cold water tap in the home run until it is clear.
