ALPHARETTA, GA, July 15, 2008 -- MACTEC Engineering and Consulting was one of five firms retained by the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DENR) to support municipalities statewide in analyzing and making recommendations for repairing potable water distribution systems to minimize water losses during a prolonged drought affecting the southeastern U.S. Ann E. Massey, President and Chief Executive Officer of MACTEC Inc., the holding company, made the announcement.

According to MACTEC Vice President and Research Triangle Park Office Manager Greg M. Pagett, P.E., the project will help communities identify and characterize water losses and persistent leaks so they're either minimized or eliminated.

"We'll be following American Water Works Association (AWWA) protocols during the water audits to determine the extent of losses through existing treatment and distribution systems," said Pagett. "MACTEC will then utilize a variety of test methods to locate the losses and develop recommendations to repair or replace lines or components causing the leaks."

Project tasks may include any or all of the following:
• Water production review
• Measuring accuracy of primary measuring device or master meters
• Water meter billing system review and analysis
• Distribution system operation and non-metered water use review
• Distribution system leakage review
• Un-metered fire lines review
• Water meter accuracy analysis
• Large meter sizing analysis
• District and sub-district measurements
• District and sub-district use analysis

MACTEC, based in Alpharetta, GA, is a leading environmental, engineering and design and construction firm focused on five strategic business practice areas: Facilities, Transportation, Water, Energy and Federal.
