SAN BERNARDINO, CA, July 12, 2005 -- The West Valley Water District recently passed a major milestone in perchlorate remediation in Southern California, USFilter Corp. announced yesterday.
The water district, as part of its overall perchlorate remediation program, has processed in excess of 1.2 billion gallons of water through its Well 18A site.
The well site has been operating since October 2003 after perchlorate levels of 18 ppb were discovered in the well water -- exceeding the state action level of 6 ppb. In order to meet the state and federal guidelines for perchlorate removal, West Valley Water District installed a once-through ion exchange resin system from USFilter at the well site. The technology was chosen due to its simplicity.
The well site produces 2,000 gallons per minute of water. The resin at the site removes perchlorate from the groundwater and holds it in the resin beads where it is later thermally destroyed. The resin needs to be changed in the vessels each year.
The four 12-foot diameter tanks at the site were manufactured and installed by USFilter. Each vessel holds 300 cubic feet of a perchlorate selective resin (PWA2), which is manufactured by Rohm and Haas Corporation. The system is configured in a lead/lag tank arrangement to ensure the facility consistently produces perchlorate free water. Although the Water District did not anticipate attaining the milestone this quickly, operations at other sites caused them to rely on the system heavily for water production.
