WESTERVILLE, Ohio, September 6, 2002 -- In its continuing effort to support promising young students, the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) Auxiliary has awarded its 2002 scholarships. Granted annually to undergraduate students who are the children or relatives of NGWA members, the scholarships have been presented this year to the following students:
Rhett Higgins, 20, of Hodgenville, Kentucky, is a student at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, Mississippi. Higgins graduated from Central Hardin High School in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, in 2001.
He was an honor graduate, played high school golf, and was involved in Y-club, Beta, Future Business Leaders of America, and several after-school programs. Higgins is currently enrolled in a well construction technology program at his college. After graduation, he plans to work for Higgins Rig Company, a business started by his father, J. Craig Higgins.
Kenneth Johnson, 20, of San Antonio, Texas, is a graduate of Churchill High School and is attending Texas A & M University, where he is studying architecture. While in college Johnson has served as vice president of Aston Hall Council, a sophomore representative for the American Institute of Architecture Students, and a class leader in his church group.
His 2002-2003 plans include being a counselor for incoming freshmen and participating in a study abroad program in Italy. Johnson's father, Steven B. Johnson, works for Edwards Aquifer Authority.
Elizabeth Jurshak, 21, of Murray, Iowa, is a graduate of Murray Community High School and is currently majoring in mathematics and economics at Central Missouri State University (CMSU) in Warrensburg, Missouri. In high school, Jurshak was involved in several activities, including student council, band, drama, 4-H, and volleyball. Jurshak, an honor student at CMSU, was selected last spring for the college's math competition team and was elected president of Kappa Mu Epsilon, a mathematics honor society. Her father, Steve Jurshak, works for SIMCO Drilling Equipment, Inc.
The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) is a membership organization representing more than 15,500 U.S. and international ground water professionals, including contractors, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, and ground water scientists and engineers.
NGWA members are committed to this basic understanding: when you are a ground water professional, it's more than just water.
