SAN DIEGO, CA, Dec. 3, 2009 -- Saying it's time for California to reinvest in its water system, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called on local water leaders to unite around a landmark $11.14 billion bond measure on the November 2010 ballot.

Addressing more than 1,600 water officials gathered at the Association of California Water Agencies' statewide conference, Schwarzenegger said the comprehensive water package passed in November represents a "bold vision for the future."

"We got the package done after decades of no action on water," Schwarzenegger said. "Now the other half of the job is to pass this water bond next year. We brought everyone together to pass the legislation, and we will need everyone together to pass this bond."

Noting that Californians have voted in recent years to invest in transportation and other infrastructure, the governor said voters understand the need for a reliable water supply. "This is the greatest investment we can make in the future of California. We have to have a vision for the future. It's not enough to look one, two or five years down the road. We have to look 20, 30 and 50 years out to make sure we have safe, clean and reliable water for the people of California."

ACWA President Glen Peterson presented the governor with a resolution of appreciation for his efforts on the water package.

"This governor has been a true leader on water, and we owe him our thanks," Peterson said.

The ACWA conference continues through Friday at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center.
