VOORHEES, NJ, Oct 27, 2009 -- American Water Works Company Inc., the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced that infrastructure engineer David M. Hughes was invited to serve on the Innovative Infrastructure Research Committee (IIRC) for the recently awarded EPA cooperative agreement "Innovation and Research for Water Infrastructure in the 21st Century."

The IIRC is being formed by EPA and the two cooperative agreement awardees, Water Research Foundation and Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF), to provide oversight, guidance and expertise for research activities conducted under the agreement. This agreement creates a research program with a total expected funding of $10 million over four years for drinking water and wastewater research.

Hughes will be part of the broad-based advisory and steering group of approximately twelve volunteer and technology leaders, with representatives appointed by EPA, WERF and the Water Research Foundation. The IIRC will provide guidance and oversight to the program including project selection, technology transfer, outreach, and outcomes evaluation.
