ElMSFORD, N.Y., Aug. 20, 2002 -- Baker Engineering NY, Inc. has been selected by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to provide geographic information system (GIS) mapping of the entire New York City sewer system.
Baker Engineering NY, Inc. is a unit of Michael Baker Corp.
The three-year, $10.4 million project involves GIS application development, scanning approximately 110,000 plan sheets, converting the data into a seamless, city-wide geodatabase, field verifying attributes for 20,000 manholes, and providing GIS applications and training for DEP personnel in each of the five boroughs of New York City.
"We are very excited about this challenging project," Baker's project director, Roland Belay, said.
"To ensure success, we will devote our full range of GIS and engineering expertise to the effort. By developing state-of- the-art solutions for this data collection and conversion project, we will be providing New York City with not only a highly accurate sewer map, but also a digital foundation that will serve them years into the future. This is the premier GIS conversion effort in the nation recently, and I am very pleased that the DEP has placed their confidence in Baker."
All work will be coordinated out of Baker's new project office in Long Island City, N.Y.
