May 20, 2002 -- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is revising effluent guidelines for portions of the Iron and New Industry.

This regulation establishes new technology-based effluent limits for wastewater discharged to navigable waters from the operation of certain new and existing iron and steel facilities.

The final regulation applies to facilities who engage in the manufacturing processes of cokemaking, sintering, ironmaking, steelmaking, vacuum degassing, casting, hot forming, salt bath descaling, acid pickling, coal forming, alkaline cleaning, hot coating, forging, direct reduced ironmaking, and briquetting.

EPA expects compliance with this regulation to reduce the amount of conventional pollutants discharged into the water by at least 351,000 pounds per year and toxic and non-conventional pollutants discharged by at least 1,018,000 pounds per year.
