NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J., Dec. 27, 2000 (PRNewswire) — The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), North Brunswick Township and North Brunswick Water L.L.C. today lifted a "Boil Water Alert" in North Brunswick Township. The Alert was put into effect yesterday.
"Samples taken by North Brunswick Water on December 26 and evaluated by a NJ DEP certified laboratory have found the water to be safe, meeting all state and federal guidelines. In addition, the plant has performed favorably since being returned to service on December 26 at 11 a.m. These factors have allowed us to lift the Boil Water Alert," said Brian Finnegan, project director for North Brunswick Water. "We regret any inconvenience this situation may have caused."
Since implementing the alert yesterday, North Brunswick Water has removed excess treatment residuals and taken other steps to put the plant back online.
On Monday, North Brunswick Water, which operates the Township-owned water system, shut down the Township's treatment plant because of concerns over turbidity or cloudy water. According to the company, recent heavy rains and unusually cold temperatures affected the plant performance and water supply, which is fed by the Delaware and Raritan Canal.
Drinking water with high turbidity levels is not necessarily harmful, but it may not be disinfected fully and can potentially provide a medium for microbial growth.
North Brunswick Water is a subsidiary of Somerville-based U.S. Water L.L.C., a private operations contractor serving customers in NJ, PA, CT MA, and NC.
