Jacobs receives Army Corps of Engineers remediation contract

PASADENA, Calif., Jan. 28, 2003 -- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. announced Tuesday that it is a 25 percent member of the Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) team selected by the Army Corps of Engineers for the $100 million

Total Environmental Restoration Contract (TERC) to remediate the 14,000-acre training range and impact area of the Massachusetts Military Reservation on Cape Cod in Mass.

Under the 10-year TERC contract, Jacobs and the ECC team will characterize the site to determine the extent of contamination and will design and implement measures to remediate the contaminated soils and groundwater.

Jacobs' scope of work will include field and site investigations/characterization (including sampling), groundwater modeling, risk assessment, feasibility studies, remedial engineering and design, GIS services, regulatory support, community relations support, data management, remedial construction support with a focus on groundwater remediation systems, and operation & maintenance with a focus on groundwater systems.

For over 50 years, the military and law enforcement groups have conducted training in the training range and impact area. This training and associated activities involved artillery and mortar firing, detonation of explosives and unexploded ordnance (UXO), disposal and abandonment of UXO, burning of excess propellant bags, and the use and testing of various other munitions. Studies have revealed that a number of areas in the training range and impact area may have been contaminated by these activities.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Jim Thiesing stated, "We are very pleased to be working with the New England District and ECC on this high-priority project. Jacobs has been working on groundwater issues at MMR for over five years and looks forward to providing the Army Corps of Engineers the services they require to finish the remediation of this installation."
