RENTON — Students and staff at McKnight Middle School can breathe easier today, now that a leaky plumbing pipe that caused unpleasant odors is fixed.
A contractor finished work on the pipes Saturday afternoon and district officials said classes will start on time today.
Students and teachers complained of headaches from the scent, described as a rotten egg or sewer smell. The odor has been an ongoing issue for at least a year at the 4-year-old school.
Plumbers dug up the school's central corridor over the weekend to expose two trouble spots in the sewer pipeline. A "seasnake" pipeline camera earlier found raw sewage leaking out of the pipeline through a cracked or misaligned pipe.
There is no estimate yet of how much the sewer pipe fix will cost the school district.
District maintenance staff, the building engineer and an independent environmental agency will monitor air quality in McKnight Middle School to ensure the building remains safe.
