• Dr. Paul F. Boulos one of only sixteen ever to receive AAWRE's highest honor
BROOMFIELD, CO, April 10, 2008 -- The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will award MWH Soft President Dr. Paul F. Boulos an Honorary Diplomate (Hon.D.WRE) at the Environmental Water Resources Institute's 2008 World Environmental & Water Resources Congress in Honolulu, Hawaii, on May 13. The award, to be presented at a special ceremony and reception to be held during the Congress, will make Dr. Boulos one of just sixteen AAWRE Honorary Diplomates worldwide.
Dr. Boulos is a leading international authority in water resources engineering whose pioneering work on distribution systems water quality modeling is now an industry standard worldwide. He has won numerous industry honors, including technical awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Water Works Association and the US Environmental Protection Agency, and has authored nine authoritative books and more than 100 technical articles on water and wastewater engineering.
Dr. Boulos chairs the Board of International Advisors of the Lebanese American University and is on the board of the National Association of GIS-Centric Software. He also served on the External Advisory Board of the Civil and Environmental Engineering School of the American University of Beirut, and served on many advisory committees for organizations including the US EPA Science Advisory Board and the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council. Dr. Boulos received his Doctorate, Master of Science, and Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky and has attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
"I am deeply humbled and honored to be selected for this distinguished award," said Boulos. "I am so proud to be a part of this noble and great profession and to be able to contribute to its advancement. It's truly a privilege to receive such special recognition for doing something you deeply love and enjoy -- especially when it comes from the men and women I most admire."
The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers was created by the American Society of Civil Engineers and its Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) to improve the practice, elevate the standards, and raise the stature of water resources engineering. Since its inception, the Academy's board of trustees has awarded its Diplomate, Water Resources Engineer (D.WRE) credential to nearly 400 engineers who have demonstrated advanced expertise in water resources engineering, extensive experience, strong ethics, and a commitment to lifelong professional development. These Diplomates comprise a wide range of water resources engineering experts in academia, public service, and private practice.
AAWRE's highest honor, its Honorary Diplomate (Hon.D.WRE), is awarded exclusively to those who have made significant contributions to the field of water resources engineering. To date, only sixteen engineers and practitioners have earned this distinction, a tribute to their exceptional technical and professional leadership within the water resources community.
S.K. Nanda, P.E., P.H., D.WRE, Chief, Hydraulics Branch, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Rock Island District, Illinois and AAWRE Trustee, commented, "This distinguished award is a fitting acknowledgement of Dr. Boulos's eminence in the field of water and wastewater engineering and his years of dedication to the advancement of hydraulic and hydrologic engineering. We thank and congratulate him for his lifetime of achievements, tireless efforts, and advocacy for the advancement of water resources research and work."
James P. Heaney, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, DEE, Professor and Chair, Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida and AAWRE Trustee added "Dr. Boulos has done an outstanding job of advancing the state of the art in urban water systems. He has collaborated with leading academics and professionals in publishing important papers, books and software that have greatly enhanced our ability to simulate and optimize these complex urban water problems."
