WASHINGTON, DC, May 20, 2008 -- The American Academy of Environmental Engineers® announced the winners of its national Excellence in Environmental Engineering® competition at its Annual Awards Luncheon May 2. The Academy awarded a Superior Achievement for Excellence in Environmental Engineering Award to CDM (Cambridge, Massachusetts) for the design the Kay Bailey Hutchison Desalination Facilities, El Paso, Texas. This project was considered to be the best of the 2008 competition.
Grand Prizes, are awarded to the best in each of the competition's categories.
Receiving Grand Prizes were:
Research - Malcolm Pirnie Inc. (White Plains, New York) for Glendale Demonstration-Scale Evaluation of Chlorite Ion to Control Nitrification in a Distribution System and Reservoirs, Glendale, California.
Planning - Malcolm Pirnie Inc. (White Plains, New York) for their Granular Activated Carbon Master Planning Project, Birmingham, Alabama.
Design - CDM (Cambridge, Massachusetts) for their design of the Orange County Groundwater Replenishment System, Fountain Valley, California.
Operations/Management - AFCEE and CH2M Hill (Englewood, Colorado) for the SPEIM/LTM/O&M Program at MMR, Otis ANG, Massachusetts.
University Research - Fungal Research Group at Iowa State University for the Value-Added Products from Dry-Grind Corn Milling Stillage by Fungal Processing, Ames, Iowa.
Small Projects - CDM (Cambridge, Massachusetts) for their project Reuse for Industrial, Agriculture, and Landscaping (RIAL), Amman, Jordan.
Seven other entrants were presented Honor Awards by the judges in recognition of projects with outstanding features. Honor Awards were presented for:

Planning - CH2M Hill for Creating & Restoring Wetlands for River Temperature Reduction, Albany, Oregon
Planning - Malcolm Pirnie Inc. and Hampton Roads Sanitation District for the York River Treatment Plant Expansion Phase 1, Seaford, Virginia
Design - Joint Venture of Greeley and Hansen, Hazen and Sawyer, Malcolm Pirnie Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant Upgrade/Contract 35, Brooklyn, New York
Design - Kennedy/Jenks (San Francisco, California) for the design of the Redwood City Recycled Water Program, Redwood City, California
Operation/Management - Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County for Making Water Work -- Reclaiming Water and Land to Produce Viable Agriculture in the Antelope Valley
Small Project - KCI Technologies Inc. (Hunt Valley, Maryland) for the South Bethany Tidal Pump, South Bethany, Delaware
