FORT WASHINGTON, PA, May 7, 2007 -- Severn Trent Laboratories (STL) have successfully completed the Environment Agency's Direct Toxicity Assessment Proficiency Scheme for compliance with the Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) for Direct Toxicity Assessment (DTA).

DTA is a mandatory requirement of the EC Directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control, implemented by the Environment Agency in England and Wales. The aim of the assessment is to help protect the aquatic environment by reducing the toxicity of industrial discharges. DTA is a process which is used to help assess the toxicity of effluents being discharged to the aquatic environment. The process will be applied to both marine and freshwater discharges.

A wide range of industries, including industrial manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies and food and drink manufacturers will require DTA testing in order to demonstrate that their effluent discharges to controlled waters (as defined under the Environmental Protection Act 1990) meet the consent levels imposed by the Environment Agency. STL can offer DTA to all these industries providing data that will be used by the Environment Agency in assessing the risk to the aquatic environment.

Compliance with the Direct Toxicity Assessment Proficiency Scheme (DTAPS) means STL will be listed on the register of MCERTS-approved laboratories for DTA testing and are one of only two laboratories approved to offer all five test methods to the standard. As of March 2007, the Environment Agency only accepts results for regulatory hazard and risk assessments that are generated by laboratories on the approved list.
