WERF awards contract to research trace organic compounds in receiving waters

April 3, 2013 -- The Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) recently awarded Limno Tech with a contract to perform research on previously developed Diagnostic Tools to Evaluate Impacts of Trace Organic Compounds (CEC5R08). The new project is titled Application of Site Screening Tools to Evaluate Ecological Effects from Trace Organics in the Aquatic Environment (CEC6R12). This phase II research seeks to demonstrate and refine the application of site screening tools previously developed.

The research is intended to assist water quality managers in evaluating potential for adverse ecological effects associated with exposure to trace organic compounds (TOrC) that may be present in treated wastewater and receiving waters.

The focus of this study is on receiving waters below Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) and where there are documented aquatic life impairments, increasing the likelihood of identifying any relationships between those impairments and other stressors. Furthermore, this approach will help determine causality between TOrC exposures and observed effects. The overall goal is to allow WRRFs to make a more informed assessment of risk from their effluent.
