NIAGARA FALLS, NY -- GHD, one of the world’s leading engineering consulting firms, is helping waste generators and operators across the U.S. navigate the complex array of solutions available for the destruction and disposal of PFAS and PFAS-containing materials from non-consumer products. The initiative follows EPA’s interim guidance on PFAS destruction and disposal released in December 2020.
“Generators and operators would be well served to fully understand the potential liabilities they face as they consider the options available to them in the destruction and disposal of PFAS,” said Ryan Thomas, Ph.D., Emerging Contaminants Practice Leader at GHD. “While the science and disposal methods identified by the EPA currently represent some of the best available options, there are additional significant risks that need to be considered.”
The EPA’s interim guidance provides an overview of PFAS technologies that may be feasible , which include thermal treatment, landfills, and underground injection wells as potential treatment technologies. It also offers considerations for communities where destruction and disposal sites are present, as well as the need for more research into disposal and destruction methods.
“Beyond the EPA guidance are several potential issues that will evolve over time, including hidden disposal costs and capacity issues, and regulatory, designation and compliance implications. Laboratory costs will also be driven up by the analytical data needed to confirm the presence or absence of PFAS as part of the disposal process,” said Sean K. Grady, CHMM, Client Relationship Manager at GHD. “The key is to achieve a full understanding of treatment processes, involve all stakeholders along the way, and a set of risk management strategies that are practical, compliant, and financially viable in the long term.”
Given the complex nature of PFAS, it is crucial to take a holistic approach in the destruction and disposal of PFAS and PFAS-containing materials from non-consumer products. PFAS specialists at GHD provide comprehensive counsel on treatment solutions, stakeholder engagement, and risk management alternatives to ensure practical and regulatory compliant management of facilities.
