Gene C. Koontz, P.E., has been elected a vice president of the American Water Works Association (AWWA). A nationally known water quality expert, Koontz brings 35 years of business experience to this leadership position. He begins his two-year term as vice president during the AWWA Annual Conference and Exposition in Washington, D.C., in June 2011.
Koontz currently serves on the AWWA Board of Directors representing the Pennsylvania Section, where his past credentials include section chair, two terms as water quality committee chair, and utility council and strategic planning committee membership. In 2009, he received AWWA’s George Warren Fuller Award for distinguished service to the water supply field.
Based in the firm’s corporate headquarters in Harrisburg, PA, Koontz is a senior vice president with Gannett Fleming. As the national practice director for the Water, Environmental Management, Dams and Hydraulics, and Construction Management Practices, he provides coordination and guidance to a staff of more than 350 who are located throughout 25 offices.
A registered professional engineer in 13 states, Koontz holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Lehigh University. In addition to the AWWA, he is an active member of the Water Works Operators’ Association of Pennsylvania, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the American Council of Engineering Companies.
