Distribution agreement signed for industrial applications of arsenic removal system

The international chemical company Lanxess Deutschland GmbH and Severn Trent Services (STS), a global water and wastewater technology firm, developed a process for removing arsenic and other heavy metal contaminants from industrial wastewater. The core of Severn Trent’s SORB 33™ adsorption system is a fixed bed made of Bayoxide® E IN-20 iron hydroxide oxide granules. The granules have finely structured nano-surfaces that adsorb the harmful substances when polluted water passes through.

The two firms recently signed a distribution agreement to establish the technology into the industrial market. The agreement grants exclusive worldwide distribution rights to STS for Lanxess’ Bayoxide water purification media. “Our adsorption process has significant potential in markets such as cleaning wastewater from excavation pits, land reclamation, mining, the metal and semi-conductor industries and the production of certain chemicals, explained Tom Mills, vice president of marketing and business development for STS.

Updated ion analyzer system uses 400 methods

The latest update to Lachat’s flagship ion analyzer system, the QuikChem® 8500, uses flow injection analysis (FIA) and features high sample throughput coupled with simple and rapid method changeover to maximize productivity in determining ionic species in a diversity of sample matrices, from sub-ppb to percent concentrations.

This system uses more than 400 methods for environmental, agronomic and industrial applications, including methods approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Some of the improvements made over the previous system include simplified cable and tubing management, leak detection, guaranteed prepared reagents, and a software-controlled heater. Lachat’s IC option, Omnion 3.0 software, and accessories, such as the Precision Dilutor System (PDS) Autodilutor, expand the instrument’s diverse capabilities.

The Flexflo A-100NV Variable Speed Peristaltic Metering Injector is now offered with an optional Micro-Flow FVS (Flow Verification Sensor) that enables continuous monitoring to ensure chemical injection. If a chemical fails to inject, the pump will stop and an alarm relay will close allowing for remote alarm indication or initiation of a backup pump.

Additional features include: self priming even against line pressure; de-gassing design that eliminates gas or air accumulation in the head; acceptance of 4-20mA, 0-10VDC and pulse input signals; flow rates to 95.1 gpi, pressure to 100 psi; accuracy: +/- 1% repeatability full range; no pulsation - continuous stream injection; tube failure detection (TFD) alarm system; LCD display and controls; and corrosion-resistant enclosure.

Its full dispensing capability enables accurate batch dispensing and automatic or single-shot operation. A ramp and drip feature allows soft start and graduated dosing to prevent splashing or foaming while the product is being pumped. Users carry out periodic dose recalibration without disturbing batch flow. Up to 50 individual dispensing programmes, including all dose parameters and calibration, can be stored in the memory with full file name.

The 520Di brushless DC motor features a speed range of 3500:1 and more than a million-to-1 flow range, offering flexible speed control combined with repeatability. Different pumpheads can be fitted to suit user needs.

Insulation blankets withstand temperatures up to 2,300º F.

RapidWrap, a complete line of thermal insulation blankets designed for use on virtually any piece of equipment, including diesel exhaust systems, gas turbines, compressors, steam turbines, pumps and flanges, is used in the water and wastewater industry, where large pumps, flanges and piping systems must be covered to avoid contamination and promote effective operation and maintenance.

These blankets provide insulation for thermal and acoustical applications and can be easily removed and reapplied to equipment, reducing downtime, maintenance and labour costs, according to Lit Industries. RapidWrap blankets are asbestos-free and insulate equipment, such as valves, pumps, compressors, tanks, exhaust systems and turbines. The blankets withstand intense conditions, including temperatures up to 1,200º F. The blankets can also be customised to withstand extreme temperature settings of up to 2,300º F.

CEDI purifies water for boiler feed without chemicals

Continuous Electrodeionisation (CEDI) water purification technology, notably the new VNX modules, offers power generators a cleaner and more compact alternative to chemically regenerated, mixed bed ion exchange plant, according to Ionpure Technologies.

Currently, this Ionpure technology treats water at the Rijnmond Energy Centre in the Netherlands, which began commercial operations in June 2004. Raw water for the treatment plant is taken from the tidal Maas River and contains high, variable amounts of total dissolved solids, total suspended solids and periodic oil contamination. Ionpure Technologies provided the IP-LX CEDI modules for a USFilter demineralization system that is one of the largest CDI systems installed to date.

Designed to produce high-purity water for boiler feed, the demineralization system includes two reverse osmosis (RO) systems feeding two CDI-LX™ systems with 25 modules per skid, each with a capacity of 85 m3/hr. System performance significantly exceeds the water quality specifications, which requires that the conductivity be less than 0.10 μS/cm and the sodium and silica concentrations be less than 10 ppb.

Sensors provide long-distance measurement and control

Measuring and control devices are increasingly needed for use over greater distances. With the use of e-Sense, taking measurements of data via intelligent sensors, such as the Diver or the e+® Sensors has become more than only measuring. The e-Sense allows monitoring and communication to be carried out from one’s computer.

The e+ Sensors are 1-, 2- or 3- channel-dataloggers for measuring climatological, environmental and technical values. The sensor can be read with an optical connector or from a distance with the use of an infrared reader unit. All sensors can be connected to a telemetry system supplied by Eijkelkamp. Once the telemetry system is connected, measurement data or alarms are sent via a modem to a database on the user’s computer.

The user can view the entire installation and make all setting adjustments. The data can be imported into Logger Data Manager (LDM) e+ software, which takes care of storing the data in a database. This also provides the user with the means to process data and produce graphic records and reports. Data can also be exported to the user’s database.
