March 7, 2002 -- At this year's IFAT, Andritz, the technology group based in Graz/Austria, presented its comprehensive solutions for sludge treatment: systems for thickening, dewatering, drying and burning of sewage sludge.
As a highlight of this presentation, the process steps in sludge treatment are projected into a section of a drying drum, representing one of the largest drying drums ever produced all over the world.
2001 was a particularly successful year for Andritz AG. Its large sludge drying plants were installed in Glasgow, Cardiff, Afan, Ford, Portsmouth and Sandown (all of them in Great Britain), in Louisville (KY) and Jacksonville (FL) in the USA. At the end of the year 2001, the company was successful in booking an order for supply of the largest sludge drying system in the world: in Singapore, it will install five sludge treatment lines - each with an evaporation capacity of 11 tonnes of water per hour.
The drum section shown at IFAT - consisting of a DDS drum dryer with a diameter of four metres -will form the screen onto which the process steps of sludge treatment will be projected to demonstrate Andritz competence in this field.
The comprehensive Andritz offer begins with the thickening of the sludge after waste water treatment. The key components for this are the drum thickeners, belt thickeners and decanter centrifuges.
Andritz will show a large decanter centrifuge type D7LL and a small centrifuge of the D2L type. Decanters are key components that our affiliate, Guinard Centrifugation, makes. With over 300 machines sold in 2001, Guinard is one of the suppliers of sludge centrifuges. In addition, the Andritz Group also offers belt filter presses of the PowerPress type for sludge dewatering. As exhibit for this process step a PowerPress machine will be shown at IFAT.
For sludge drying, Andritz supplies drum and fludized bed dryers, which can be designed as large systems or as compact units - for an evaporation capacity of 0.5 t to 20 t H2O/h per line. The dried sludge granulate has many uses: as fertilizer, soil improver, fuel and aggregate for industrial processes, e.g. production of cement.
The final process step that Andritz offers in its complete system is its "EcoDry" granulate burner. Here, the dried sludge granulate is utilized thermally. A part of the heat produced is used as fuel for operating the system, another is available for heating.
