Contract with the City of Corona focuses on biosolids processing and power generation

DENVER, Colo., August 26, 2002 -- CH2M HILL has been selected by the City of Corona, Calif., to provide a full suite of services for environmental and energy-related upgrades of the city's Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) No. 1.

The contract, valued at $4 million, includes project management, permitting, engineering, design, procurement, and construction support. The project includes biosolids processing upgrades and power generation features. The plant is expected to be operational in 2004.

The permitting services include supporting the preparation of permitting documentation to the California Energy Commission and the South Coast Air Quality Management District. This entails locating and securing the emissions offsets required to operate the power generation portion of the plant upgrades.

A portion of the electrical output from the cogeneration plant will be used to power the WWTP modifications. The balance of the electricity generated by the plant will be sold into the local power grid. Hot flue gas and hot water from the plant will be used in the biosolids upgrades systems. In addition to the improved nature of the biosolids product and power dependability this plant will offer, the City of Corona plans to use profits from the power plant to offset power costs for its citizens and local businesses.

"CH2M HILL is pleased to have been awarded this contract by the City of Corona for this vitally important project. It will have a series of positive impacts on the local economy, strengthens our long-term working relationship with the City and further demonstrates CH2M HILL's breadth in the energy, power and environmental segments of the overall infrastructure markets in the U.S.A.," said Dr. Jim Ferris, president of CH2M HILL's Energy, Environment and Systems Business Group.

In addition to this new project, CH2M HILL has provided the City of Corona with major water and waste water management services for several years.
