OAKVILLE, ON, Nov. 11, 2002 -- The City of Kamloops, British Columbia has awarded ZENON the contract to supply its latest generation ZeeWeed® membrane technology for a new drinking water plant to be built in Kamloops.
The City approved construction of the new plant for the burgeoning community that will treat up to 42 million gallons of water per day. With a contract value of nearly $20 million, there are plans for future expansion of the drinking water treatment system as the community grows.
Ernie Kurtz, City Engineer, indicated that after undergoing a comprehensive review process of various technologies over a two-year period, the City of Kamloops chose ZENON's membrane filtration technology. According to a comparative analysis of sand filtration over membranes, membrane filtration was cited as the better technology for producing high quality drinking water, in addition to its ease of operation.
"Members of City Council were looking to ensure that area residents receive superior quality water," stated Kurtz, "not only to meet current requirements, but also to guarantee that same level of quality as those requirements are tightened in the future."
The ZeeWeed® 500d membrane, ZENON's latest generation of 500 series technology, was selected and will be installed in the new facility. More cost effective than previous versions, the 500d is ideally suited for larger scale plants.
Stantech Consulting Ltd. and Urban Systems Ltd. are the consulting engineers responsible for designing the new plant.
Currently, the largest operating ultrafiltration drinking water treatment plant is in Olivenhain, California, which also uses ZENON's system. Once completed by 2005, the Kamloops facility will become Canada's largest ZeeWeed® plant.
