Oct. 4, 2002 -- The first National Water Monitoring Day will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, to mark the 30th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act.

On that day, citizens across the nation will have the opportunity to become involved in sampling water quality.

The main purpose of the event is to take a snapshot view of streams, lakes and coastal waters throughout the U. S.

Local monitoring and watershed groups from across the country will perform four key tests: dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity/clarity and temperature. Test kits may be ordered through the Year of Clean Water website at http://www.yearofcleanwater.org .

EPA is also working with American Clean Water Foundation and other federal agencies, states and local entities on events throughout the year.
