WARRENDALE, PA, Sept. 26, 2008 -- Siemens Water Technologies is supplying 50 HydraClam online distribution water quality monitoring devices, along with a 12-month service contract, to United Utilities in northwest England. The HydraClam technology will play a key role in the utility's proactive water management program, allowing it to monitor water supply quality and distribution network maintenance to support United Utilities Operation and Maintenance Strategies (DOMS). Once installed, this will be the first large-scale adoption of the remote communication-enabled monitors anywhere in the world.

With Siemens' HydraClam water quality monitoring device, the utility can now measure turbidity, pressure, conductivity, and temperature remotely, as often as required. The results are then transmitted by GPRS to a web-based viewing dashboard.

The HydraClam unit, jointly developed with Salamander Limited, is used for targeted, real-time monitoring within identified problem areas or as a fixed-place monitor, and is the only product of its type available in the marketplace today. Made of lightweight corrosion-resistant aluminum, the device can easily be fitted underground to certain European hydrants or truncated to the main for hydrants in other countries. Its low profile makes it less susceptible to tampering and provides increased security. The fire department can easily remove and replace the device from fitted hydrants. Siemens projects the unit's use to increase in the years ahead as the need for distribution system monitoring gains importance due to continued changes in legislation, technology and consumer perception as well as the aging pipe network.

With the business activities of Siemens VAI Metal Technologies, (Linz, Austria), Siemens Water Technologies (Warrendale, Pa., U.S.A.), and Industry Technologies, (Erlangen, Germany), the Siemens Industry Solutions Division (Erlangen, Germany) is one of the world's leading solution and service providers for industrial and infrastructure facilities.
