SACRAMENTO, CA, Sept. 19, 2008 -- California American Water was recognized by the Sacramento Chapter of the American Public Works Association for the design, construction and operation of arsenic treatment systems for water utilities in Walnut Grove and Isleton, California. The twin project was completed in September 2007. California American Water won the award in the category of Large Agency Environmental Projects ($2 Million to $10 Million). HDR designed the facilities and managed the construction of the treatment facilities.

"The new treatment facilities are improving water quality for Walnut Grove and Isleton," said California American Water General Manager Tom Glover. "These system improvements are having real benefits for our customers."

"California American Water deserves to be recognized for these investments," said Tim Fleming Northern California-Pacific Area Manager of HDR. "These two arsenic treatment facilities have improved the reliability and service quality of the water systems for both communities."

APWA judged each project on several criteria, including safety performance, public outreach, management practices and the completion of projects on schedule and budget.

"HDR has done a terrific job in designing and managing the construction of our complex treatment facilities in Isleton and Walnut Grove," said Glover. "It's good to work with engineers who bring critical infrastructure investments in on time and on budget. We have made a good team."
