The American Society of Plumbing Engineers appointed Cory Powers to the new position of ASPE Young Professionals Liaison to the Board of Directors.

CHICAGO, IL, FEB. 8, 2014 -- The American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) recently announced the appointment of Cory Powers to the newly-created position of ASPE Young Professionals (AYP) Liaison to the Board of Directors.

The nonvoting position was established to give ASPE's young members representation at the national leadership level and to ensure that their needs are met with appropriate education, networking and mentoring opportunities. Further, AYP is designed for young professionals who want to meet and network with other up-and-coming plumbing industry engineers and designers to share experiences, exchange ideas and establish new contacts.

Powers, an Engineer in Training at the Milwaukee office of HGA, a full-service architecture, engineering and planning firm, joined ASPE in 2008 and volunteered to chair the ASPE Young Professionals special-interest group when it was established in 2012. He was sworn in on January 31 during the ASPE Board of Directors meeting in Chicago, Ill.

"I am honored to be able to assist the ASPE Board of Directors with a different perspective," he said. "I believe the inclusion of a younger voice on the board will help ASPE evolve into a society that can cater to the younger generation."

Since its inception, AYP has hosted numerous social, networking and educational events for young engineers and designers. Likewise, a number of venues across the country have allowed young professionals to engage with their peers and meet with senior ASPE members and discuss leadership opportunities. AYP also provides webinars designed to help young professionals learn more about the industry and recently held a workshop in Los Angeles on intermediate plumbing system design. Each local ASPE chapter has an AYP liaison, and several of these individuals are participating in this year's Engineers Week with presentations at local schools.
