• Cantel Medical's Mar Cor Purification subsidiary acquires Fluid Solutions Inc. -- Move extends its water purification reach into New England -- LITTLE FALLS, NJ, May 2, 2006 -- Cantel Medical Corp., through its Mar Cor Purification subsidiary, has expanded its infection prevention and control business in water treatment by purchasing the assets of Fluid Solutions Inc. Fluid Solutions, based in Lowell, MA, designs, manufactures, installs and services high quality, high purity water systems for use in biotech, pharmaceutical, research, hospitals, and semiconductor environments. For the year ended April 30, Fluid Solutions generated approximately $5 million in revenue.
Andrew A. Krakauer, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Cantel, stated, "Fluid Solutions' strong brand name in New England, superb service capability and a proven track record of innovative design, is a perfect fit for our Mar Cor Purification subsidiary. We anticipate growing our business in Fluid Solutions' key markets, as well as expanding further into the healthcare and industrial arena. Mar Cor Purification will be retaining the employees of Fluid Solutions, including its founder and president, Brian Hagopian, who has entered into a three-year employment agreement. Hagopian has worked in the water industry since 1981.

• Ontario water report dangerously flawed, could lead to privatization and loss of local accountability -- TORONTO, Canada, May 1, 2006 -- The Ontario Municipal Water Association (OMWA) is warning Queen's Park that proposals to create a provincial Water Board, as well as establish local water companies across the province, could ultimately lead to the privatization of Ontario's publicly-owned water infrastructure. The OMWA was responding to a report by the Water Strategy Expert Panel, established by the provincial government, which has made recommendations to David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. The report, titled "Watertight: The Case for Change in Ontario's Water and Wastewater Sector," recommends rationalizing the system by requiring counties, single-tier municipalities, and regional municipalities to submit plans to a proposed Ontario Water Board on how they will amalgamate water systems within their boundaries (and even beyond) to achieve greater cost-efficiencies. The Water Board would have the authority to approve or require changes to these plans...
• Several final, proposed federal water rules due this year -- DENVER, May 1, 2006 (WaterWeek) -- The EPA plans to finalize several drinking water regulations this year, including the Ground Water Rule (GWR) in August and the second Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR2) in November, according to an AWWA report. The agency's semi-annual regulatory agenda. Published in the April 24 Federal Register, also has revisions to the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) slated for proposal in August and the second preliminary regulatory determination due in October. The LCR proposal stems from the agency's ongoing review of implementation issues, and the regulatory determination will address if at least five contaminants on the second Contaminant Candidate List should be regulated. The EPA recently sought comment on several additional studies to support the long-delayed GWR and released an update on the UCMR2. Also due this year are a proposed rule (in May) to codify the agency's 2005 policy statement exempting certain water transfers from Clean Water Act (CWA) permitting under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), a proposed rule (in June) to implement court-ordered changes to the agency's Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation Rule, separate final rules (this summer) approving numerous analytical methods for CWA and Safe Drinking Water Act compliance purposes and several methods for monitoring levels of E. coli and other microbial contaminants in wastewater and biosolids, a final rule (in June) to codify an earlier policy statement regarding the regulation of pesticides applied to waterways, a final rule (in June) exempting storm water discharges from oil and gas operations from CWA as directed by the 2005 Energy Policy Act, and a final policy (in October) regarding CWA discharge permitting of peak wet-weather discharges from wastewater treatment facilities...

• Fuji Keizai releases reports on water resource market in Japan -- TOKYO, Japan, April 28, 2006 -- Japanese market researcher Fuji Keizai announced April 27 it has published a report on the Japanese water resource market. According to the report, the domestic market for the water resource industry for services such as water and sewerage treatment reached 466.4 billion yen (US$4.0 billion) in 2005, and is expected to increase to 569.7 billion yen (US$4.9 billion) in 2010. By sector, the water treatment material segment accounted for 192.1 billion yen (US$1.6 billion) in 2005 and will reach 239.1 billion yen (US$2.0 billion) in 2019; the device and plant segment will rise from 234.0 billion yen (US$2.0 billion) in 2005 to 276.6 billion yen (US$2.3 billion) in 2010; the related service segment will climb from 40.3 billion yen (US$344.0 million) in 2005 to 54 billion yen (US$461.5 million) in 2010.
