EMERYVILLE, CA, Feb. 15, 2006 -- New Logic Research Inc., the maker of VSEP, a vibratory membrane filtration system, announced today the commissioning of a VSEP system to recycle process water at the KFx K-Fuel™ plant outside Gillette, WY.
The VSEP system, which employs reverse osmosis membranes, is fed process water used in the K-Fuel processor. The VSEP product water (permeate) is cleaned to such a purity level that it can be reused as the plant's boiler feed water to make process steam.
"We are very excited to be a part of KFx's vision for the future of coal power," said New Logic CEO Greg Johnson. "The integration of VSEP into the K-Fuel process represents the joining of two truly unique, environmentally friendly technologies."
In evaluating the process options for water recycling at the plant, KFx considered numerous technologies including traditional filtration methods followed by spiral-wound reverse osmosis membrane modules. In the final analysis, however, KFx determined that the VSEP system was the best solution that could provide the necessary water in one step; thus eliminating the need for expensive pretreatment and chemical usage.
"As a commercial specialist in applying proven water filtration technologies in unique operating environments, New Logic Research was an ideal choice for our first K-Fuel processing plant," said Ted Venners, KFx's Chairman and Chief Technology Officer. "KFx is committed to operating facilities that ensure safe, efficient production of cleaner coal, supported by environmentally friendly processes. New Logic understood and delivered consistent with this objective."
According to New Logic CTO Dr. Brad Culkin, "For nearly 20 years, New Logic has worked with cutting-edge companies like KFx to enable innovative energy processes in industries such as oil sands, ethanol and biodiesel. We're proud to be an integral part of the KFx K-Fuel process, and we look forward to supporting their water needs in the future."
The KFx plant outside Gillette, WY, is the first full-scale commercial K-Fuel plant, and will produce 750,000 tons of low-emissions, high-BTU coal per year. Two additional sites in Wyoming have already been announced, which will produce 4 million and 8 million tons of K-Fuel per year respectively.
