HONG KONG, March 10, 2010 -- The South Lantau area in Hong Kong is popular for its bathing beaches and has some of the most ecologically valuable waters in Hong Kong, including a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Black & Veatch has been selected by the Drainage Services Department (DSD) in Hong Kong to conduct an investigation study for a sewerage treatment works at South Lantau as part of the Outlying Islands Sewerage Stage 2 project. The project will provide sewerage collection and treatment to villages in South Lantau Island while ensuring that the special marine environments off the island maintain their natural beauty.

Black & Veatch will be responsible for the planning, environmental permitting, and preliminary design of the sewerage collection system, which includes an environmentally friendly, compact state-of-art wastewater treatment plant and a marine outfall for effluent disposal. Black & Veatch will investigate the suitability of membrane bioreactor technology for the wastewater treatment plant. The project will also be a pilot to assess the implementation of Eurocodes, structural design codes for civil engineering, to Hong Kong for drainage and sewage works.

Black & Veatch was selected on the basis of its extensive experience in village sewerage schemes and sewage treatment design and construction. Black & Veatch's integrated global workforce was also an important factor in the award, with the local project team having the ability to draw on Black & Veatch's global expertise in sewerage treatment.
