MANILA, Philippines, June 7, 2010 -- MPIC-DMCI led Maynilad Water Services Inc. (Maynilad) is set to secure a second Sahara® mobile leak detection unit for its aggressive non-revenue water (NRW) reduction program. The West Zone concessionaire is the first Asian water utility company to use this equipment.
This year, Maynilad intensified its leak-repair drive to lessen the adverse effects of El Niño on the water supply of its customers. Since February, the company was able to repair more than 14,600 leaks and recover 97.62 million liters of water per day (MLD).
The company's first Sahara® unit was deployed to Sampaloc, Manila and the north region of the Maynilad concession, where there are high concentrations of leaking primary lines. The second unit will be used in other Maynilad areas which also have significant losses.
Maynilad is also exploring possible agreements with Local Water districts and other water utility companies in South East Asia who are interested in using Maynilad's Sahara® unit to bring down water losses in their service areas.
The Sahara® mobile leak detection system can accurately detect leaks, pockets of trapped gas, and structural defects in water main lines without interrupting water service. It is currently being used by water utilities in Brazil, Canada, Australia, and USA.
