RACINE, WI, & NAPERVILLE, IL, Dec. 16, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- JohnsonDiversey, a global leader in cleaning and hygiene solutions, and Nalco Company, a global leader in water treatment and process improvement solutions, today announced an industry-leading alliance that will help customers in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical and institutional industries reduce their total operating costs, improve operating efficiency and reduce environmental impacts.

JohnsonDiversey and Nalco have developed a total-site program called Responsible Resource Solutions that takes a comprehensive approach to a facility's operations, and delivers solutions to better manage key resources such as water, energy and waste.

"Our alliance with Nalco is consistent with our global strategic objective to partner with our customers to deliver safe, healthy, high performing facilities," says JohnsonDiversey President and Chief Executive Officer Gregory E. Lawton. "Nalco's water treatment and process expertise, coupled with JohnsonDiversey's cleaning and sanitation expertise provides customers with complementary benefits in this important area."

Nalco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr. William H. Joyce added that this alliance would provide a new, comprehensive resource to customers.

"JohnsonDiversey and Nalco working together provide customers in these targeted markets with a breadth of applications and experience that is unmatched in our industry," says Dr. Joyce. "Together we can identify customers' vital needs and help them improve their mechanical and chemical processes, optimizing water and energy use while minimizing waste. Our alliance supports Nalco's strategy of expanding the process and water-related offerings we can provide to our customers."

Responsible Resource Solutions is a key component of ResponsibleSolutionsTM, JohnsonDiversey's initiative for partnering with our customers to deliver safe, healthy, high-performing facilities. Responsible Resource Solutions is also a key component of Nalco's philosophy of delivering industry best practice solutions that improve operational performance.

JohnsonDiversey and Nalco have been operating together in an alliance in Europe for several years, focusing on total site resource management. Customers say the alliance gives a better understanding of where their costs are generated within their systems and shows them where they could save money by better managing and optimizing their total material resources. Customer enthusiasm has led to the decision to extend it to other parts of the world and to substantially expand efforts in Europe.

The decision by a global soft drink maker's facility in the U.K. to move forward with JohnsonDiversey and Nalco in 2002 proved to be an eye-opening move.

"They helped us identify some areas where we had problems but didn't realize it," said Steve Walters, quality assurance manager for the plant. "It was a case where we didn't know there were solutions, because we didn't know about the problems. It helped us get better control of the water we use and where we use it."

For example the customer streamlined its water consumption through reusing water in certain applications. Walters said one of the program's analyses of water usage recommended that water used in bottle washing be recycled to feed other non-beverage functions that required water.

"So we use it twice -- and then you throw it away," Walters said. "Eventually you reduce the amount of water you use by essentially reusing water through other processes. To be honest, we had never considered that before. JohnsonDiversey and Nalco really brought in some fresh thinking."

Responsible Resource Solutions aligns the resources of JohnsonDiversey and Nalco to jointly offer a comprehensive program to existing customers and new customers, share proprietary technologies, and leverage shared resources.
